Farrat’s Chris Lister becomes Vice Chair of the Northern Region of the BCSA

Farrat Structural Thermal Break Commercial Manager, Chris Lister, is now Vice Chair of the Northern Region of the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) – the trade body for UK and Irish Steelwork Contractors and the wider structural steelwork supply chain. This key role reinforces our commitment to help promote the efficient use of structural steel in the Northern UK construction market.

The British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) has been representing the UK and Irish structural steel sector for over a century.

It is a focal point at a local, national and international level for the steel construction industry, acting as its representative body and central management services organisation.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to become more involved in the work of the BCSA and the drive to inspire greater and more innovative use of structural steel in world of Construction,” says Chris Lister, following the appointment.

Current Structural Steel Market Landscape

Despite the instabilities caused by BREXIT, the COVID-19 pandemic, large scale price increases, scarcity of supply and the climate emergency, we are still seeing record numbers of structural steel projects underway, thanks in no small part to the growing spotlight on sustainability within the UK construction industry, which has developed rapidly in the last 12 months with the focus firmly on low carbon solutions.

“Structural steelwork is the original sustainable material with the ability to be recycled and re-used time and time again to deliver structures that meet the low carbon demands of clients and the climate emergency”, comments David Moore, Chief Executive Officer of the British Constructional Steelwork Association earlier this year in June.

“It is also able to deliver efficient, practical, and flexible spaces that are both beautiful and cost-effective. 2020/21 has been a challenging year with COVID-19, Brexit and supply issues but even with these trials the constructional steelwork sector has remained buoyant and continues to provide high-quality buildings and infrastructure for demanding clients”.

One of BCSA’s key sustainability activities has been to produce a decarbonisation roadmap for the constructional steelwork industry, as well as a sustainability specification which may form part of the NSSS, and a revised Sustainability Charter.

“As a North West based engineering and manufacturing firm, we’re pleased to represent the North of England in the steel industry,” stated Oliver, CEO of Farrat.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that Chris will bring an important angle in not only promoting the use of steel in construction, but in driving awareness of how to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability in steel construction through specialist solutions such as structural thermal breaks”.
