Severfield plc have erected 1,700t of steelwork, integrating Farrat TBK 25 Structural Thermal Breaks, for the latest steel-framed building to top-out at the King’s Cross development ‘Building S2’.
The 12-storey building will offer 23,000m2 of commercial space on Handyside Street and is set to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ environmental rating.
Steel-framed buildings increasingly achieve high ratings after being assessed under BREEAM. Steel offers sustainability credentials through the whole life-cycle of a building, and is an excellent choice of framing material – a recent survey by Building magazine, sponsored by Steel for Life, identified that over 66% of multi-storey, non-domestic buildings are framed in structural steel, making it the preferred framing solution for many of the UK’s structures.
Farrat Structural Thermal Breaks are high-performance thermal insulators, used between steel-to-steel and steel-to-concrete connections. Manufactured from materials specifically developed for use within the building envelope, both our Farrat TBK and Farrat TBL Structural Thermal Break materials have British Board of Agrement Certification (BBA), to ensure that designers and engineers have complete confidence in the product when used in structural connections.
Steel connections that include structural thermal break plates should be designed in accordance with the relevant design standards (e.g. BS EN 1993-1-8) or industry guidance (e.g. SCI publications). Under the SCI Assessed Product Scheme, the technical data and structural design methodology for Farrat Structural Thermal Breaks has been independently verified by the SCI.
